LEA HOSTS 3RD RERA CONFERENCE AND AGM

The Lesotho Electricity Authority (LEA) will host the third Regional Electricity Regulator’s Association (RERA) Conference and Annual General Meeting at the Lesotho Sun Hotel from November 20-22, 2006.

The Conference and AGM will be officially opened by the Minister of Natural Resources Dr. ‘Mamphono Khaketla to a group of more than 50 delegates who will include bankers, investors and the SADC region electricity industry stakeholders.

The theme of the conference is “Electricity Regulation and Investments in the SADC Region”. The theme was decided by RERA upon the realization that in the near future the generation capacity of the Southern African region will not meet the demand for electricity from its consumers. At the same time there is also a growing need to bring electricity to the majority of SADC citizens which live in the rural and impoverished areas. Like in other regions of the world, SADC countries including Lesotho have experienced lack of investment in the electricity and this has stifled economic growth and improvement in the lives of their citizens.

The significance of the event is that after, being launched earlier this year, the LEA which is the body mandated with regulating the electricity sector in Lesotho for the benefit of its stakeholders and the Basotho people, once more brings the country into spotlight of international attention with regard to electricity once more brings the country into spotlight of international attention with regard to electricity issues.
